About Us
Ujamaa is a volunteer hostel located in Arusha, Tanzania. We provide fun, safe, budget accommodation where you can meet like-minded people and spend time volunteering as well. It is our belief that if you want to volunteer you shouldn't have to pay for the experience so at "Ujamaa Hostel" we offer free volunteering opportunities with local organizations in desperate need of help. (Please see our Volunteering page for further information) We welcome short-term visitors as well!
Ujamaa is the Swahili word for "extended family" or "family hood" which in Africa means that every individual is in service of the community. It is the belief that a community should be based on cooperation and that the advancement of the whole is the foundation for each individual's existence. This ideal is the basis for the "Ujamaa Hostel" where people can come together to share their skills, expertise and enthusiasm with those in need in the local community…and have a whole lot of fun while doing it!

ABOUT ARUSHA
Arusha is a medium sized city located in Northwest Tanzania at the base of Mt Meru and about 100kms from Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Arusha is the gateway to The Serengeti National Park, the largest and most impressive game reserve in Africa, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater, which is one of the most pristine and spectacular sights in Tanzania.
Arusha also offers a wide range of restaurants with a decent selection of western and local food. There are many small supermarkets and one very large supermarket where you can find pretty much anything you might need. You can easily get around town on the local transport, dala dala, but there are also a vast number of taxis that can take you anywhere you need to go. Arusha also has a movie theatre, some nice bars/pubs and a very comfortable climate.
