Ujamaa Hostel was created for volunteers and travellers to provide the best quality low-cost accommodation and volunteer experiences in Arusha, Tanzania. It's fun, friendly, safe and affordable - so why not stay with us and you can meet like-minded people, check out the Tanzanian culture and spend time volunteering in the local community.

Ujamaa is the Swahili word for "extended family" which in Africa means that every individual work for the benefit of the community. It is the belief that a community should be based on cooperation and that the advancement of the whole is the foundation for each individual's existence. This ideal is the basis for the Ujamaa Hostel where people can come together to share their skills, expertise and enthusiasm with those in need in the local community, and have a whole lot of fun while doing it!

If you are interested in volunteering, it is our belief that if you want to volunteer you shouldn't have to pay for the experience so at Ujamaa Hostel we offer free volunteering opportunities with local organizations in desperate need of help. If you are interested in Volunteering with us, we require a minimum commitment of 2 weeks and you can stay as long as you like. (Please see our Volunteering page for further information)

Ujamaa Hostel was established in 2008 and since then has hosted 100s of volunteers who in turn have done countless hours of volunteer work in the local community.

If you're a traveller looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of African life, why not relax in our large gardens or enjoy the TV/DVD collection? With staff who are always happy to help, large rooms, huge communal areas with breakfast, dinner and laundry included, how can you go wrong?
