WELCOME TO UJAMAA'S WEBSITE

About Us
Ujamaa Hostel is for volunteers and travellers and is located in Arusha, Tanzania. We provide fun, safe, affordable accommodation where you can meet like-minded people, check out the Tanzanian culture and spend time volunteering in the local community if you want to.

We welcome short-term visitors and travellers to the hostel for 1 night or more.

If you are interested in volunteering, it is our belief that if you want to volunteer you shouldn't have to pay for the experience so at Ujamaa Hostel we offer free volunteering opportunities with local organizations in desperate need of help. If you are interested in Volunteering with us, we require a minimum commitment of 2 weeks and you can stay as long as you like. (Please see our Volunteering page for further information)

Ujamaa is the Swahili word for "extended family" or "family hood" which in Africa means that every individual is in service of the community. It is the belief that a community should be based on cooperation and that the advancement of the whole is the foundation for each individual's existence. This ideal is the basis for the "Ujamaa Hostel" where people can come together to share their skills, expertise and enthusiasm with those in need in the local community and have a whole lot of fun while doing it!
Ujamaa Hostel is owned and run by an Australian woman and her Tanzanian husband. Both Carley and Gasper have extensive experience with volunteering in Africa and hostel management. We'd love to have you stay with us!

2010 is already turning out to be a fantastic year Ujamaa Hostel. We have had some awesome Volunteers come through who have achieved great things at all the projects and many of them have decided to stay on for a longer time and continue to help out.

Ujamaa Hostel has also opened its first project: The Ujamaa Children's Home. This is a really exciting new development for us and we're looking forward to this growing in the future with the help and support from our volunteers. The Ujamaa Children's Home currently has 5 children and we're hoping to expand that to 10 children over the coming months. For more information please go to: www.ujamaachildren.com
